The Punchbag Workout

Any person doing any form of weight lifting/training will notice as the muscles develop the body starts to stiffen. So it is important to do some kind of weekly exercise to counteract this. I personally have always kept flexible with some kind of punchbag workout.

How does a Punchbag Workout keep you flexible?

The constant movement of throwing a punch will train the muscles not to seize up after a few movements. These movements are building stamina, & with stamina comes power, because it becomes easier to throw punches. The reason the muscles stiffen is down to a thing called Lactic Acids but we wont go into that.

This workout was created by Richie from Fitness 1st Steps who has helped people with all kinds of fitness programs and advice over the years. All via the Fitness 1st Steps website and youtube channel.

The Workout

The workout is a music based workout with voice commands. For 3 minutes per round you will follow the simple commands punching your way to the end where you will get a 1 minute recovery time. If I say 1 – 1 – 2 then you throw a right – right – left or a left – left – right, it is up to you which hand is your 1 and 2. I will then say SWITCH and 2 – 2 – 1 so we will always throw the same amount of punches on each side to keep training equal.

The other commands are simple, when I say STOP you stop punching and put your hands in front of your face in the protection position. Listen to what I say and carry on. When I say HARDER I want you to punch a bit more harder. When we go into SLOW SOFT JABS I want you to just tap the bag slowly and softly because I am giving you a rest.

Where can you get The Punchbag Workout?

The punchbag workout is only available on the Bandcamp website as you can see below. I chose Bandcamp because they do a streaming facility. So if you buy the album you can download and play on your device at any time. But you also have the option to log into Bandcamp and stream the workout from any device.

This workout took 3 months to design and create but it still has a very low price tag of £9. Each round is a different workout as you can hear. Some are power rounds & some are speed rounds, all designed to mix things up to keep the mind motivated.

Once you have done this workout a few times you will learn the moves by sound recognition like you do with normal music. That’s when you can put in better form and try out different punches to work other muscles.

Watch the video below to see me with 3 different punch targets whilst doing round 4 of this workout.

Imagine the below workout on your phone and you are standing in front of a punchbag or shadow boxing at home. Press play and get into the zone. Throw the punches now as you listen and feel how this punchbag workout could push you to your goals. As I said in the video above, there is a very small fee for owning this workout for life.

This whole workout will push you to throw 3,444 punches, but you dont have to do all 12 rounds all of the time. The important thing is you now have a workout you can do anywhere anytime that will keep you flexible and is great for the heart.

There is no exaggeration to the list above, those are the benefits of all workouts for punchbags. Whether you do this totally original PUNCHBAG WORKOUT or some other form of punching workout these are your goals.

The Punchbag Workout will NOT teach you how to box but it will give you the tools to be a better boxer.

Most cardio or circuit training exercise routines will have some kind of punching movement in them. Why? because the whole punching movement is a great form of exercise, some even do it with light dumbbells.

Different types of punches

Here are a few different types of punches you should try to fit in, as they bring different muscles into action. As I said before, the more you do the workout the more you learn the commands. Then you will have more time to think about the type of punch to throw.

workouts for punchbags uppercut punch

You can even use the elbows like they do in kickboxing or instead of punching do kicks. Then when you think you’ve mastered the whole 12 round workout try strapping some light wrist weights to your wrists and start again.

The Best Punching Bag For Home

THE BEST PUNCHING BAG FOR HOME header

There are many punchbag types but what is the best punching bag for home use? On this page you will learn about the most common punching bags and what they are good for. Also what punching bag is best for you within your living environment. I have owned and trained with many different types of boxing bags over many years. With my experience I want to help you find the perfect punchbag for your fitness goals.

So before buying a punchbag there are a few things to consider regarding wall, floor and ceiling fixings. Also where will this punchbag spend most of its time.

The video below is basically what is written below. Watch it or read on.

The list below should give you a good idea on where to fix or stand your punching bag.

Things to consider before buying a punchbag

  1. Where will this punchbag stand or hang.
  2. What type of ceiling do you have if you want a hanging bag. You need to get some good fixings for the bracket to hang the punchbag. If you have a concrete ceiling then you are pretty much good to go. If you have plasterboard and joist then you need to fix to the joist close to the wall. That would be my advise but always ask a professional. Another option is to have a wall mounted bracket. I have listed one below.
  3. If you want a free standing punchbag you need to check your floor surface. Tiled or laminated flooring will cause the free standing punchbag to slip as you punch. This could cause wear and tear on the floor. If you have carpet the bag wont slide but after some time it will wear the carpet. I can literally punch my slam man around my gym, but I have a heavy tiled floor. My slam man weighs over 100kgs.
  4. Your neighbours! When I have a session on my hanging punchbag my girlfriend says she can feel the whole place rattling. So make sure you place it away from any adjoining walls if possible. Or do your punchbag workout when they are not home. Don’t forget they can report you for noise pollution.
  5. Finally, think about what kind of training you want to do. The one thing I miss doing when on my hanging punchbag is the uppercut punch. But I have a slam man with a jaw so I can change. When I do The Punchbag Workout I swap between 3 different targets throughout the rounds. So what I’m saying is different bags cater for different punch types.

Different types of punchbags

The points above may seem a bit silly or obvious, but I think they are well worth mentioning. I have trained for many years on many different boxing bags and this page is designed to help you make the right choices. Something I didn’t do in some cases.

The best punching bag for home can be different for each person. Here are some different types of punching bags. Have a look and see what is the best punchbag for you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I thought I would supply A link to a trust worthy site in case you decide you want to buy.

The straight heavy punchbag

This RDX Punchbag is 5ft or 4ft and comes with a hanging wall bracket. Weighs 20 kg = 44 lb. Also has some boxing gloves and other bits that come with it too. That’s the reason I’ve posted this here. Its all you need to get started. When hanging this bag make sure the top of the bag is about 6inches above your head.

Another Straight Punchbag

The Maxx Black straight Punchbag is pretty much the same as the above, but it gives you different fixing options. You can choose a hook for the ceiling or the wall bracket. Filled to weigh 25kg approx. This bag is very durable and will last for many punches.

Free Standing Straight Punchbag

This fantastic free standing punchbag stands at 5.25ft (160cm) tall. No need to fix to anything so no fixings need. BUT you will need to get some sand from your local DIY shop and fill the base up or lots of people use water.

The Angled Uppercut Hanging Punchbag

This one would be the best punching bag for home for me. This angled boxing bag is great for practising those uppercuts. Given the choice I would swap my straight bag for one of these any day. But only if I didn’t have my slam man. Filled to weigh 25kg (Approx) but this can be adjusted because it has a zip.

The Hanging Torso Punchbag

Another variety of the uppercut bag just like above. More angles to punch or even grapple. This weighs approximately 22-24 KG. However if I had a choice of this one or the above I would choose the above. Purely because it is top heavy and would suit a lot of normal punches followed by uppercuts.

Century BOB Punch Man

This is my dream punch target. I do have a slam man which you can see below but I would much prefer the feel of a realistic punch. The slam man only has a certain punch area, but it does have a great jaw to practise those uppercuts as does this one. Again you will have to fill the base up with sand or water.

The Slam Man (Bruce Lee version)

This is the Bruce Lee version of the slam man that I have. My one is grey and this one is the yellow and black Bruce Lee colours. That is the only difference apart from the yellow scratch. I bought the slam man because it has a light system where you have to hit the light to turn it off. This was good until the novelty wore off. I dont need the lights because I do The Punchbag Workout with it. Also it it only the yellow parts of the punch man that can be hit as I said above.

A Cheaper Torso Punchbag

Here is a cheaper version of the above punch targets. I have never hit one of these unlike all of the above, so I cant really give my opinion. It looks good for the price but make sure you read all the reviews first.

The Floor to Ceiling Boxing Ball

This floor to ceiling ball, also called a double ended punch bag is for speed training. When someone walks into my gym and see’s this the first thing they do is punch it hard, it then swings back and forth very fast. I say you’ve now got to hit that again. They try and fail. This punching bag is not for power its for speed and acracy. Like the name says it fixes to the ceiling and the floor. I have a floor anchor similar to the one below so no floor fixings necessary.

No floor fixings required with these handy floor anchors. They come empty so you will need to get some sand from somewhere to fill them. You ONLY need one but I have given you 2 options. They both look as good as each other so I would normally go for the cheapest.

The Speedball

Finally. For me this definitely isn’t the best punching bag for home. The speed ball punching bag. This is the first punchbag I ever owned. To be honest it was so noisy I could hardly use it because of my neighbours and family. Also all it really did was a cardio speed workout for my raised hands. But I can do that with the floor to ceiling bag above which is the quietest punchbag out of all boxing bags.

By now you should definitely have a good idea on what punchbag is best for you. However now you need to get the best out of your punchbag. I can help with this also. Try The Punchbag Workout or if you already have you can checkout where the punchbag workout originated from at www.iBoxingRounds.com

I hope I have helped you find the the best punching bag for home for you and also the best punchbag workout too. Good luck with your training.

The Mini Punchbag Workout

The MINI Punchbag Workout album cover

This mini punchbag workout will give you 3 – 3 minute rounds with a total punch count of 812.

  • Round 1 – 290 punches thrown
  • Round 2 – 290 punches thrown
  • Round 3 – 232 punches thrown

This is a quick workout that I personally use as a warm up to a weight training session. Most gyms have a punchbag hanging somewhere and that’s why I keep a pair of punching gloves in my gym bag.

This is just like The Punchbag Workout but shorter. 3 rounds instead of 12, if you are looking for a longer cardio punch workout you can check the 12 rounder HERE!
